A little history

The City of Tumwater describes itself as the oldest permanent American settlement on Puget Sound. Settlers led by Michael T. Simmons arrived at Tumwater Falls in 1845, and the town took its name from the Chinook jargon word for a waterfall. Brewing started at the foot of the falls in 1896, and the Old Brewhouse tower, built in 1906, is still a landmark you can see from I-5.

Areas you’ll hear about

When you look at homes in Tumwater, you’ll hear the names the city uses in its plans:

  • Brewery District: the area around the former Olympia Brewery, between Custer Way, Cleveland Avenue and Capitol Boulevard, which includes some of the oldest parts of town.
  • Capitol Boulevard Corridor: the main street running north toward Olympia.
  • Littlerock Road, Black Hills and Town Center: other areas the city has made plans for.

Every street is different. If you’d like to compare two neighborhoods side by side, ask us and we’ll pull recent sales for both.
